The sound of gravel crunching underfoot is matched only by shouts of ‘Onward!’
The idea that there is a destination - somewhere we’re headed - it makes me smile.
They’re holding hands as we walk.
The older sister is leading this charge, of that there is no question. Good leader that she is she’s packed a lunch for us, filled water bottles and asked to use the compass my dad gave me for Christmas to keep our direction.
We’re traipsing through tallgrass but you couldn’t tell them we’re not in a jungle.
Lara Croft leading Nathan Drake with Sully in tow.
I’m taking all of this in while it’s here and I have it.
The sunset. The clouds. The breeze. Everything about this is perfect.
And it won’t last. This won’t be forever.
But that’s the trick, yeah?
The days won’t be great. Some will be absolute shit and no amount of coffee or silence will change that.
But now? This moment?
For however long it lasts it is perfect.
If heaven isn’t an eternity of this it will be a disappointment.
